Asymptopia
The voyage to get to Asymptopia starts.
**Guess the slope. Beat the noise. Watch the estimator converge.**
Asymptopia is a fast, arcade-flavored game about a real statistical idea: as
your sample size grows, an estimator gets more accurate — and you can *feel*
it happen.
Each stage, a hidden linear model is drawn: `y = α + βx + ε`. You're shown a
scatter of noisy data and asked to guess the slope **β** by aiming a line
through the cloud. Lock in your guess and fire the **magnet** — it sweeps
along your line and reels in every point it passes close to, and every point
caught is a point scored.
You clear the stage if your guess lands inside the *true* 90% sampling band of
the ordinary-least-squares estimator. Clear it, and the sample size doubles —
3 observations, then 6, 12, 24… all the way to 12,288 — and the band gets
tighter. Miss it, and the round ends.
At the end of every round you get the full reveal: the true line, the OLS
fit, your guess, the exact p-value of your call, and a live "funnel" plot
showing exactly where in the shrinking band you landed, stage by stage. Play
enough rounds and a growing histogram shows the shape of *every* guess you've
ever made — a sharp spike at zero means you're reading the noise well.
## Why it's fun even if you've never heard of OLS
You don't need to know any statistics to play — you're just eyeballing a line
through a cloud of dots and trying to beat a shrinking target. But if you
*have* studied econometrics, regression, or statistics, Asymptopia is the
large-sample-properties lecture turned into a reflex game: consistency,
asymptotic normality, and shrinking confidence intervals, all live under your
cursor.
